40 Songs for Turning 40

Tomorrow is Jill’s 40th birthday. For those of you who don’t know, Jill is my Charming Farming blog partner, my go-to person for all things chicken, and my good friend. Because she is such a special lady, I wanted to get her a special gift. But what? I briefly considered getting her a pig, but decided a pig is usually something a girl likes to pick out herself.  Some new Muck boots? I wasn’t sure of her size? A day at a spa? Ummmm, actually that would have been really nice…..but instead I made her a playlist that I will burn to a CD – old school!

My friend Missy also turns 40 this week. She has recently found herself unexpectedly embracing farm life. So, there are all sorts of gift possibilities, but anything she might want, she could make herself.  She’s one of those crafty people. But the beauty of a playlist is that there are a zillion possible combinations. So, maybe I can come up with something unique to celebrate both of my friends!

I tried to find a combination of songs – songs that relate to turning 40, songs from the 80’s and 90’s and songs that are just plain fun. So here, in no particular order, are 40 Songs for Turning 40

  • It’s the End of the World as We Know It by REM – It isn’t. Not even close. But it’s a fun song nonetheless.
  • Any Way You Want It by Journey – Because it’s your 40th and that’s how you should have it.
  • Stealing Kisses by Lori McKenna – This one is kind of bitter, but some days it might be just what you’re in the mood for.
  • That Age by Hollywood Drunks – This song was clearly written by someone much older than any of us, but I’m starting to relate to it.
  • Get the Beat Back by Dave Mathews – A wishful thinking song.
  • Let it Be by Paul McCartney – This is a great attitude to adopt going in to your 40’s
  • Still Fighting It by Ben Folds- Everybody knows, it sucks to grow up.
  • I Gotta Get Drunk by Willie Nelson and George Jones – It’s your birthday and you don’t gotta do anything you don’t want to do, but this is a great song.
  • 100 Years by Five for Fighting – A beautiful song about how fast time goes – but not in a depressing way.
  • Rockin’ Me by the Steve Miller Band – A rockin’ song for rockin’ women!
  • Passionate Kisses by Mary Chapin Carpenter – Is it too much to ask?
  • Landslide by Stevie Nicks, The Dixie Chicks, or Smashing Pumpkins (but I hope not them) – Because even children get older.
  • Hooch by Everything – A go-to pick me up song – perfect for drinks with your hub.
  • Sunshine by Josh Rouse – A funky little tune. Trust me you’ll love it!
  • The Scientist by Cold Play – Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it  would be so hard
  • The Hard Way – Mary Chapin Carpenter – A song to make you feel good about where you are.
  • Angry All the Time by Tim Mcgraw – Because let’s be honest. Sometimes this is how we feel.
  • Jump On It by Sir Mix-A-Lot –  Perfect for playing loudly and embarrassing the kids.
  • You’ve Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party by the Beastie Boys – Fight the laundry. Fight the kids’ schedules. Fight exhaustion. It’s a different fight, but you’ve still gotta fight.
  • Remember When by Alan Jackson – Because being 40 means you’ve been married a loonnnggg time.
  • Second Hand News by Fleetwood Mac – Maybe the best song ever.
  • Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran  – Another reminder that being married a long time is a good thing.
  • To Be With You by Mr. Big – Because it’s so much better than Mariah Carey or Brittany Spears or other 90’s chart toppers.
  • I’m Gonna Be by the Proclaimers – And so is this.
  • Steady as She Goes by Broken Boy Soldiers – Live a simple life in a quiet town.
  • Then by Brad Paisley – I’m sure this is exactly how your husbands feels about you.
  • Don’t Come Home Drinking (with lovin’ on your mind) by Loretta Lynn – Because every badass country woman needs some Loretta on her playlist.
  • It Ain’t Me Babe by Johnny and June – This song has nothing to do with anything, but you’ve got to have Johnny and June too.
  • Backward Down the Number Line by Phish – If only!
  • Lost Stars by Adam Levine – You are going to love this one!
  • I Bet My Life by Imagine Dragons – A more current hit, so you feel cool.
  • Cigarette Day Dreams by Cage the Elephant – An alt rock number to solidify your coolness.
  • Brother Love’s Travelin’ Salvation Show by Neil Diamond – A super fun song to sing along to that has absolutely no relation to your actual life.
  • American Pie by Don McClean – Another perfect sing along song.
  • You’re So Vain by Carly Simon – Clearly this will be the sing along portion of the playlist.
  • The Luckiest by Ben Folds  – Sigh.
  • Someday by Sugar Ray – Another 90’s hit but now it is someday.
  • I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2 – No pressure. You still have another 40 or 50 years.
  • Livin’ On a Prayer by Bon Jovi – You knew there would be Bon Jovi!
  • Make a Memory by Bon Jovi – What? A Bon Jovi song you haven’t heard? Well, Happy Birthday!
  • High School Never Ends by Bowling for Soup – Because there are days that if feels that way. Even at 40!
