Snow Day – From the Animals’ Point of View

Arkansas is a great place to live in the winter.  We get just enough snow in my part of the state – the Ozark Mountains – that we all own sleds and snow boots, but not enough that we really know how to function.  If we get as much as a dusting, the school closes, the yoga pants go on, and cookies go in the oven.  Snow days are glorious!

That’s one reason this year has been such a disappointment.  We went the entire month of January with no snow – snow we were counting on thanks to the persimmon weather test. This year, like last year, the reports have been all spoons.

Last year we missed 21 days of school. TWENTY-ONE DAYS!  So, as you might imagine, expectation for another awesome winter have been super high around here. At last, on Sunday, it snowed!  The kids are thrilled – of course.  The animals reactions have been mixed.

This was the buffaloes’ reaction to the snow…

Yippeeee! Snooooowwww Daaaayyyyy!

After just a few hours, the ducks were ready to brave the weather.

ANYTHING is better than being cooped up with those crazy hens for another second!

The Hens weren’t so sure…

C'mon, Ladies. The ducks are making snow angels.

On second thought…

Nope. No. Definitely not too cold. Too slippery. Back inside, Ladies. Back inside.

The buffalo, on the other hand, love the cold…

Hey Guys! Look! Look at me! I'm eating snow ice-cream.
Hey Guys! Look! Look at me! My beard turned white.
Grow up, Carl.

The snow brought out the wild animal in some of the herd…

C'mon, you guys! Let's join that Polar Bear Club!

And some, just wanted to be alone and ponder the beauty of it all…

And the dogs, just wanted to come in and sit by the fire…

I hope wherever you are, if you have snow, you are enjoying it as much as we are.  We would love for you to join us on Facebook and shore your winter photos there – snow or no snow.

  1. What an enjoyable post! I often conceptualize what my hens and roosters must be thinking, especially with the changes in weather. We are like y’all here in the piedmont of NC when it snows. Complete shutdown. Prepared to weather a low of near 0 degrees F tonight. I hope to get to visit the Ozarks some day.
