Dreaming about Summer…

As I sit here thumbing through the already wrinkled pages of my latest Johnny’s Seeds catalog, I can’t help but think of summer and long for warmer days. Right now it is a whopping 17 degrees outside here in Northwest Arkansas. Yikes! I cannot wait for the first signs of Spring! For now, however, the cold gives me time to snuggle up and plan. Oh, I am a planner. I plan and I dream. Every year I flip through the pages of my seed catalogs so much that the pages are falling apart. I have corners bent over, pages marked, and seeds circled. New and exciting vegetables are waiting to be ordered. Veggies to eat ripe and fresh, or to can and dehydrate. Flowers are practically blooming off the pages, enticing LC’s charming bees to buzz up the mountain and pollinate my veggies! The possibilities are endless! Then it happens like it does every year. I fail to order.
I don’t know why, but I rarely follow through ordering anything online. In fact, I think I have ordered online exactly three times in my life. Weird, I know. So every year on April 15th, I am rushing over to the Mennonite nursery to get their best tomatoes, cukes, and squash.
Now, before I go any further, I’d like to say this nursery is great! They have the most beautiful hanging baskets you will ever see. They have three foot tall tomato plants for two dollars. They really strive to provide the best veggies and flowers in the area. And I appreciate that. It’s just I think I am ready for the next phase of gardening.
So, to start off the New Year right, I am going to order from Baker Creek and Johnny’s Seeds this month! I am planning now. Tomatoes, okra, peppers, green beans, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and squash. I can’t wait! I plan to plant Amish paste tomatoes for canning. Last year we planted Rutgers and Arkansas Travelers. They did fine, however when we canned the Rutgers, I felt as if a lot went to waste. We also plan to freeze green beans this year. I love to garden. I love planting and picking, and I even love to weed. To me, there is something therapeutic about working in the dirt with your hands.
Charming Dawson also loves to garden. He is never too far away when planting, harvesting or tearing down the garden for winter. He is training Little Charming Butter to help also.985
I will let you know when I get my goodies ordered. For now, I am heading out to water the rabbits before bed. Their water is freezing so quickly, we are trying to water three times a day. Stay warm, wherever you may be, and keep us posted on what you are planning on planting this year! We’d love to hear from you! ~Jill

  1. Hey, Get that order in and start those seeds. In your basement with a grow light. I did some hydroponic tomatoes last year. This year I want to do some hydroponics outside.
Less water usage, no weeds, and easy cleanup. Good luck with your crop. Later.
